Plitvice Lakes National Park

If you had to choose just one natural beauty, out of all of them placed in Croatia, our advice would certainly be to choose Plitvice Lakes National Park because it has the ability to awe visitors again and again and displays a unique charm, no matter what season you visit it. Plitvice lakes were proclaimed a national park 8. April 1949. meaning they are the oldest (and largest) Croatian national park. Its surface spreads over two counties (29. 685 ha), and consists of 16 dark green lakes of varied sizes which flow cascading one into another. They are divided into the Upper and Lower lakes. The Upper lakes are: Prošćansko, Ciginovac, Batinovac, Okrugljak, Veliko, Malo, Galovac, Vir, Milino, Gradinsko, Kozjak, Veliki Burget. Lower lakes are: Milanovac, Gavanovac, Novakovića Brod i Kaluđerovac. Kozjak is the largest and deepest lake with 81,5 ha surface and 47m depth.

Being the best known Croatian national park is completely justified due to the 16 beautiful connected lakes surrounded by a green forest, luxurious waterfalls and crystal turquoise, grey, dark blue and green glittering water. Breath-taking sights wait at every corner for you to eternalize them with a photograph. Plitvice Lakes NP represents an unforgettable experience – the wild nature, improvised wooden trails and bridges, purling water, smell of greenery and heavenly contact of thumping waterfalls and magnificent lakes. The park is located at the very borderline of continental and maritime influences which led to the diversity of the flora. Visitor cannot help but notice the sensational water lilies and grass growing next to the waterfalls, interestingly called „Zelena Bradica“ (Green Beard).

Forests in the Park are inhabited by bears, wolfs, badgers, bobcats and foxes – interesting fact is that 30% of the Croatian butterfly fauna is located right here and most of them can be seen during the summer. Park’s true beauty is acknowledged by many foreign experts, placing it on numerous lists of top destinations and most beautiful national parks and places in general.
